Degradation of food and feed caused by myco-toxins is a fairly widespread problem within Europe and also out of Europe, because of their high toxicity. The possibility of having a low-cost detection system that combines speed and reliability of analysis, within the agro-food sector, is therefore a priority for European SMEs. Based on this need, the OTASENS project, funded by the European Community, has been launched in 2009. Result of this project has been a laboratory prototype, able to detect and quantify the Ochratoxin A (OTA) in wine, beer and feed.
The project coordinator, Automation Ltd., together with another European company, Lumisense Ltd, and other 4 European partners, has initiated in July 2013 a phase of realization of industrial demonstrators, the DEMOTOX Project, also financed by the European Community. The new devices have the characteristics of portability, simplicity, sensitivity, low cost and user friendly, in order to allow the producers of the agri-food sector to directly test their products for detecting myco-toxins.
The tests will be led by EWOS (Norwegian company engaged in the field of aquaculture). An Italian marketing firm, CREASYS Ltd., will conduct market studies. The two RESEARCH INSTITUTES, which have developed the laboratory prototypes, will prepare some fundamental components and will transfer the technology developed in OTASENS project to AUTOMATION srl and LUMISENSE Ltd.
